Hardwood Flooring in Alpharetta

Serving all of Metro Atlanta

There are many flooring options for Alpharetta homeowners who are looking for hardwood flooring. With advances in manufacturing and production, there are laminate flooring and vinyl flooring options that look like wood. If you want real hardwood, however, you have two choices: engineered hardwood and solid hardwood.

Solid hardwood flooring is made from one piece of wood, and this flooring is meant to last decades. It’s an excellent choice for areas that have a lot of traffic, but it isn’t so great for basements, kitchens, or bathrooms.

Hardwood Flooring Finished or Hardwood Flooring Unfinished?

Unfinished hardwood flooring is raw wood that will need to be sanded and finished after installation. This will involve staining the boards to whichever color is desired and then sealing the floor using multiple coats of polyurethane or varnish. Homeowners might opt for unfinished hardwood flooring because there are many different options available. However, it’s important to note unfinished floors are more likely to be damaged.

Finished hardwood flooring is the more popular choice because it is simpler to install, it is more durable, and it is immediately functional. The materials do cost a little more, but you will save money with the installation.

Learn More About Hardwood Flooring

Solid hardwood flooring is made from a single piece of wood, typically ¾” thick. It is produced in a variety of species of wood as well as a variety of widths, the most common begin 2 ¼” and 3 ¼” wide. The benefit of solid hardwood is not only in the added value to your property, but that it is meant to last decades. It can also be refinished multiple times, rather than replacing, to simply refresh or even change the color. Hardwoods are an excellent choice over a plywood subfloor, and specifically in areas without excessive moisture. The custom nature of choosing a color and finish for hardwoods allows for a great deal of variety, although matching newer floors to previously finished floors can be a challenge. Additionally, when repairs are necessary, consideration must be given to the area and nature of the repair. Prefinished hardwoods typically allow for the easiest repairs and are a popular choice because it is simpler to install and immediately functional. Site-finished hardwoods using unfinished hardwood offer a more custom look but also require more time for installation and finishing. And, when a repair is necessary, site finished floors may also require resanding entire rooms or connecting hardwood areas to provide the most consistent finish.
Engineered hardwood flooring is made of multiple layers of multidirectional wood product, with the top layer being a hardwood veneer. The top veneer can range from 1mm thick to 4 mm thick, and overall thickness typically from 3/8” to 5/8”. The widths can range from more traditional looks of 3” and 5” wide up to a more modern 10” wide plank. The most common widths you’ll find today, however, range from 6.5-7.5” wide. Engineered woods are offered in a variety of species from Oak to Hickory, Maple, Birch, Acacia and other more exotic varieties. Engineered hardwoods can be installed on any level of your home, over both plywood and concrete subfloors. The multilayered, multidirectional design enables engineered wood to resist expansion due to additional moisture and humidity, but as a rule are not typically counted as waterproof products. There are a limited number of newer engineered woods on the market that are offered as true waterproof wood products. Beyond its resistance to moisture, engineered hardwood is not typically intended to refinish with the exception of products that have a thicker veneer (3-4 mm), which will allow it to be sanded and refinished once or twice. Engineered hardwoods generally offer more scratch resistance than solid woods, and the wearability over time is aided by the appearance of built in distressing or handscraped finishes that help minor scratches to blend into the overall appearance. For more serious damages, most engineered hardwoods can be replaced on a board by board basis, and the best outcomes are typically if the same material in the same production or dyelot is available to install. For this reason, we encourage our clients to keep additional boards on hand for future small repairs if necessary.
